Spiritual Activities

Sunday Morning Worship
A time to celebrate our part in the mystery of life, to center ourselves, and to know ourselves as members of the human family; to meditate, to sing, to learn, to share our joys and concerns.
Services: Sunday morning 10 am. at the Church

Music
Music is an integral part of our worship, expressed through a wide variety of musical styles. Our choir sings most Sundays, and offers a musical service once a year, in the Spring. Everyone who loves to sing and can carry a tune is welcome. Reading music, while advantageous, is not required.

Services for Special Occasions
A minister will collaborate with individuals and families to create services for particular occasions, such as marriage, unioin ceremonies, dedication of children, coming of ages, funerals, rededication on an anniversary, retirement, etc. These services are offiered to our members, as well as to those with no regular church affiliation, or to families with roots in more than one culture or religious tradition.

Religious Education
Our children's religious education program is designed to teach youngsters about the religious traditions of the world, the application of religious and ethical principles to daily life, appreciation for individual differences, and respect for the environment. Our program uses curricula developed by the UUA, and is offered concurrently with Sunday morning worship at 10 am. in the Parish Hall. The program is conducted by our Director of Religious Education, and is overseen by a lay Religious Education Committee.

Small Group Ministry
When people are asked why they come to church, the most common reasons are: to be part of a religious community, for inspiration and intellectual stimulation, to meet people, and to find support for their spiritual journey. Small Group Ministry meets these needs and seeks to address the social isolation and superficiality so characteristic of modern life. It is a response to the deep hunger in our hearts for real connection with each other, and for spiritual exploration and growth.

Soulful Sundown
Exploring spirituality through the arts, Soulful Sundown is an alternative service provided several times a year to Channing members & friends, as well as the local community. With music as a central theme, Social Sundown aims to create a high quality, spirituality centered service, which draws on the talents of local, regional and national performers. Soulful Sundown is preceded by Soulful Supper, a time of sharing and fellowship over soup and bread provided by Channing volunteers. All are welcome to participate!

Zen Meditation
Every Monday evening, 7-8:30, in the Parish Hall all are invited to participate in Zen Meditation. The program is free and open to Channing members and friends, as well as to the public (a small donation is appreciated). No experience is necessary. Please bring cushions and/or a blanket to sit on. This ancient practice teaches us to clear our mind, understand our true self, and live our life with clarity and compassion.

Dharma Teaching - Tibetan Buddhism
Venerable Khensur Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Wandak returns this summer to offer teachings on the Buddhist four noble truths: suffering, the causes of suffering, cessation of suffering, and the path to cessation. The Rinpoche who was born and studied in Tibet is a contemporary of the Dalai Lama who now resides in CT. It is a great honor to be in the Rinpoche’s presence as he imparts this ancient insight which is relevant to the modern world. Suggested donation $10 per lecture, but no one will be turned away.
